NAS316 - No HDD Spin Down

Hi, I have a NAS326 with 2 WD Red inside.

The HDDs do not go to sleep (HDD LEDs always on) and are running 24/7, even if the NAS is not in use. This is poor for HDD lifetime and for energy consumption.

The NAS does also not set the HDDs to sleep, if network cable is disconnected.

Cloud thumbnail generation and cloud are off.

I remember, the HDDs did go to sleep at the beginning (some years ago). And I cannot remember that any setting was changed since during time.

This is poor for HDD lifetime and for energy consumption.

It is poor for energy consumption, but not for HDD lifetime. A disk wears most from (sudden) temperature change, and keeping it spinning prevents that. The bearing of a harddisk is that good that it without problems can spin for years.

Anyway, if the disk doesn't sleep, it's because something is accessing it regularly. Does the disk spindown after some time when you pull the network cable? In that case there is something in the network (or on internet) which is keeping the disk up.

My package Tweaks (to install it, install MetaRepository first) has an option to log all disk access. Unfortunately it's quite low-level, so it can be difficult to find the culprit this way. The procedure is to start it delayed, then logout and leave the NAS alone for a few hours, then login again and download the logs. This is because having the webinterface open also accesses the disk.

As written, both HDDs do no spin down even if the network cable is disconnected.

The sleep setting is 15 minutes. But no spin down after network cable is disconneted for more than 1 hour.

Sorry, but I'm not familar with Linux and installing software / tools on the NAS.

In that case you only option is to perform a factory reset, and hope it solves the issue.
