WiFi 7 AP Mesh Capability

As we move forward with the implementation of WiFi 7 APs, it's essential to understand the changes and limitations regarding mesh capabilities. This update will recap our current mesh technologies and highlight how they apply to our new WiFi 7 APs.

Overview of Mesh Technologies

We currently support three types of mesh connections:

  • Wireless Distribution System (WDS): Establishes a mesh connection between standalone APs.
  • ZyMesh: Creates mesh connections within APs managed by an on premise AP controller.
  • Smart Mesh: Establishes mesh connections within APs managed by the Nebula Control Center (NCC).

Technical Details

  • WDS and Smart Mesh: Technically identical, using the same configuration syntax and running configurations.
  • ZyMesh: Uses a different syntax and configuration module, indicating a separate codebase running on the APs.

Key Points

  • No ZyMesh on WiFi 7 APs: WiFi 7 APs do not support ZyMesh,
  • Smart Mesh Adoption: The USG FLEX H Series firewall will adopt Smart Mesh instead of ZyMesh, starting from 2025.

Compatibility and Impact

Here's a summary table to illustrate mesh capability compatibility:
