Nas326 backup size huge !

Hi!
Why is the backup size using the builtin backup function of Nas326 MORE than TWICE the size of the total size of the backuped origin?
Today I scheduled a backup with the builtin backup from my Nas326 to an external USB disk.
The total size of the files on the Nas326 are about 450GB and the size of the (empty) external USB disk is 1TB.
To my surprise the backup failed because the USB disk became full!!
The USB disk was empty when the backup started and after the failed backup it was completely filled with 2 GB files...
How come???
