Yes, I use the back USB ports (both of them). One of the USB sticks has an LED indicator which never lit up when connected to the NSA. So my goal is to use the serial console to reinstall the boot loader and then force the device to boot from the UpgradeKey stick if possible?! Stock firmware is handling well my needs, so I don't want to switch it.

Well bodhi knows where he is talking about. But I don't know why using the serial console seems difficult? It's a matter of connecting 3 pins on the motherboard of the NAS to an usb to TTL serial device, and using a terminal emulator like PuTTY. The commands to type can be difficult (as in, hard to guess, hardly documented), but that is step 2.
