I have connected a HDD to the esata port of my NSA310 but it does not show up anywhere in the volume listing.

On a 310 with an esata disk connected you can create a raid1 volume. So I think a disk on the esata is treated as an internal disk. In that case the existing filesystem is ignored, and you'll have to create a volume on it (which will destroy all existing data on it).
