What kind of operating system it's running? Can't find info anywhere.
I've to push or rather make a cronjob to one of my server's and it should sync some files back to "local" nas server every night or so. I'm assuming here, it should be possible through sftp, scp or rsync?
Is it possible to install Linux distro on it? If not, why?

It's running Linux, what else? You can use scp or sftp when you enable the ssh server. If you have to ask, you can't. The firmware is not designed to be exchanged by something else. So you would have to write/customize your own distro to match the hardware.
