Hi, I have an NSA320s. I've been a long time linux user and recently I discovered that in Ubuntu, which I'm mainly usin the SMB1.0 support was disabled in the latest kernels (I do understand why).

Is there a safe way to update the NSA320s firmware to support a newer SMB protocol?

I know of two options. You can install Debian on that NAS, with a newer smbd. More info here. Or you can install the Entware-ng smbd as drop-in replacement of the firmware smbd. More info on http://zyxel.diskstation.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=24. If you can't reach to zyxel.diskstation.eu, (DNS issues) you can use metarepository.tk, which is the same server.
To install Entware-ng, first install MetaRepository. http://zyxel.diskstation.eu/Users/Mijzelf/zypkg-repo/
If you need to use metarepository.tk, you'll have to edit the web_prefix file.

The firmware uses only stock Linux software raid and filesystems. So in Debian it's a matter of the rigjht configuration to get the disks assembled and mounted.
Entware-ng runs next to the firmware, and by using the zyxel-samba-replacement package only smbd/nmbd is replaced. The firmware still mounts the filesystems and managed smb.conf.

Thank you Mijzef for this valuable and well composed info!

In these options can I leave the existing storage disks as they are (I will backup before making changes)? In the case of using either Debian or Entware-ng, will they recognize the my current storage disks as they are now without the need of formating them?
