NR7102 SMS help
Hello all,
I really need some help with retrieving the SMS from my Zyxel NR7102 device. I upgraded the firmware to the latest April 2024 version to enable this function but each time i press Retrieve Inbox in Broadband -→ Cellular SMS the router restarts and doesn't retrieve anything. The SIM has SMS functionality enabled and works on any other device I tried. Thanks!

Hi @bruteForce ,
Can you confirm the fw is V1.00(ABYD.3)C0? thanks.

The router has latest firmware installed. I am leaving this here for others to see maybe it's usefull.
Having installing the latest firmware (Maintenance→Firmware Upgrade→Upload) I managed to make it work after performing a reset (Maintenance→Backup/Restore→Reset).
You have to make sure the SIM card has SMS functionality enabled which is totally dependent on SIM origin (country and operator). Once you reset the router you will have to first make sure that the card has no more than 127 SMS stored inside. If so you will have to first delete all SMS and only after that, try to retrieve the SMS using the Router (Broadband → Cellular SMS). If you have important messages use a mobile phone to retrieve them and then clean out the SMS storage. After making all of these you can try sending/receiving an SMS message through the Cellular SMS interface and it should work.
By the way, the router interface has limited functionality. First of all you can only send SMS messages to mobile phones and not the operator (e.g. when you want to set/enable some SIM functionality or enable data packages usually by sending short text to small digit numbers).
Another issue is, the SMS characters can be missing depending on text localization and PDU settings. In my case the UCS2 character set was still not being displayed correctly because as far as I can understand it has GSM mode enabled by default, but it's ok in my case.
You can also gain root access to your router (absolute must for advanced settings) and putty SSH into it and then send the corresponding atcmd commands to /dev/ttyUSB3 and get the SMS messages. I even managed to write a simple script using python (netmiko and smspdudecoder libraries) to retrieve, format and correctly display the SMS messages using the correct UCS2 PDU decoding algorithm. It's very possible, but you have to fiddle with commands at your own risk and also read the atcmd documenation. If you need assistance send me a PM and I will share some info.
