DX3301-T0 WiFi keeps dropping (but router says its fine)
So, my wifi from my zyxel DX3301-T0 router keeps dropping. I run netspot and the wifi disappears. I connect to the router with ethernet and it says that its working fine. The green lights are on for 2.4ghz and 5ghz and there are no reported issues, yet the wifi has disappeared.
The only thing that fixes it is rebooting the router. This has happened twice today already.
WTF is going on. I found a reddit post saying the 29th Nov 2024 firmware update has a bug in it given the huge number of reports of wifi problems, but i can't find anything official from zyxel, and there's no new firmware with a bugfix. please can someone from this terrible company fix their god damn router.
ps dont buy zyxel. my cheap ass ISP sent it to me cause they're cheap and zyxel is cheap.

i rebooted the router again because it stopped working, and the wifi started showing up again on netspot, however other devices (an ipad) can connect to the wifi, but are given the orange notification error (no internet connection), when right next to the ipad im connected with my laptop and im using the internet.
how bad is this firmware? this is like the most basic functions that a router needs to perform.0 -
Just got off the phone with my ISP. they accessed the router via API and they noticed 1 discrepancy with the GUI.
1. I set up the router initially with 2 separate networks, one for 2.4ghz and 5ghz. they had different SSIDs, and i disabled MPro Mesh.
2. these networks wouldnt penetrate the whole house, so i switched back to mesh networking, and then installed some wifi extenders (tp link decos) but had to create a different SSID network for their mesh as they're incompatible with Zyxel's mesh.3. So the zyxel is now back on MPro Mesh with 2.4ghz and 5ghz under one SSID. However my ISP reports via the API that Band Steering is turned off. This setting doesn't appear anywhere on the GUI though.
4. The ISP told me the API documentation says that the tick box under 'Home → Network Setting → Wireless → General → Wireless' that says enable same setting for 2.4ghz and 5ghz is band steering. This was enabled and greyed out because MPro Mesh can't be turned on without the networks being the same (SSID and password).
5. The ISP remotely enabled it via the API, despite it being ticked and greyed out. Perhaps this is where a bug in the firmware is located.0 -
seriously? no response from zyxel? you guys suck. your routers are cheap and buggy. the wifi currently just stops working about once or twice a day and your router doesn't even detect its down.
I have netspot running with 0 wifi detected, but if i connect to the router directly, it says no issues and both 2.4ghz and 5ghz is on and running fine. even the lights on the router themselves are flashing green.
how badly can you mess up firmware to not detect that the wifi isn't working.0 -
so i enabled logging on the router to check for whats going on and one of the times the wifi crashed and didn't come back on (sometimes it crashes and manages to relaunch itself) i found these WiFi logs - there's a separate 'Mesh' category but they didn't have any errors.

it looks like there's some memory leak / buffer overflow / other bug related to managing multiple access points. I've turned off the MPro Mesh feature for now yet kept the SSID's for 2.4ghz and 5ghz named the same thing. if this still crashes, i'll rename them to hsh-24 and hsh-5 and see if that resolves the issue.
I am also running a separate mesh network in a separate part of the house using other hardware (tp link deco p9s) but under a different SSID. These have their own firmware bugs too but these keep running fine. It's specifically the wifi on the zyxel router that drops and only that wifi that drops.
finally worth mentioning, the wifi SNR is pretty awful upon reboot despite it being on its own channel and having no inteference from other SSIDs on even adjacent channels. I get -50 to -60 (netspot goes 0 to -100) which is pretty bad considering its got direct LoS, same room, and is maybe 5m away. i believe this translates roughly ~ 20 to 25 dB. is this typical??0
