Nebula FWA515 – Enterprise Firmware Enhancement Proposal
Hello Zyxel_Melen,
Dear Zyxel Development Team,
Thank you for your response and for taking the time to review my feedback.
I appreciate your request for more detailed use cases. I also apologize if my previous messages did not provide the level of detail your engineering team needed for proper evaluation.
Before presenting the requested features, I would like to explain why I have invested considerable time in preparing this document.
These recommendations are not theoretical. They are based on daily hands-on experience gained since OCT 2025.
The primary reason I am sharing this feedback is that I have encountered several operational challenges in real business deployments. As a result, some decision-makers have started considering alternative solutions.
In business environments, the highest priorities are operational reliability, network stability, and ease of management. Hardware specifications, industrial design, and even brand loyalty become secondary if the solution cannot consistently meet operational requirements.
Throughout this period, I have consistently spoken highly of Zyxel products and recommended them because I genuinely appreciate the quality of the hardware. However, I have also experienced disappointment when I see that much of the platform's impressive hardware capability is not yet fully reflected in the firmware or its continued development.
To provide some context, I currently manage more than 20 Nebula FWA515 units in production environments, in addition to several previous generations of Zyxel 5G routers.
The observations presented in this document are therefore not based on isolated personal use, but on extensive real-world operational experience across multiple deployments.
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect is seeing such a powerful hardware platform paired with firmware and a management interface that do not yet fully reflect the expectations of a modern business-class 5G router.
This is precisely why I prepared this document. My objective is not to criticize the product, but to contribute constructive feedback that helps Zyxel unlock the full potential of a platform that I genuinely believe can become one of the strongest enterprise 5G routers in its class.
Why These Requests Should Be Evaluated DifferentlyThe Nebula FWA515 is not a consumer-grade home router.
It is a premium 5G router specifically designed and marketed for business and enterprise deployments.
Therefore, the requested enhancements should not be viewed as individual feature requests or personal preferences. They represent capabilities that business customers, system integrators, managed service providers (MSPs), IT administrators, and enterprise users commonly expect from equipment in this category.
The following use cases explain how these features would be applied in real-world deployments and why they would provide tangible value for Zyxel's target market.
Typical Deployment ScenariosThe Nebula FWA515 is commonly deployed in:
- Small and medium businesses
- Branch offices
- Retail stores
- Warehouses
- Construction sites
- Remote offices
- Temporary work locations
- Backup WAN deployments
- CCTV surveillance systems
- VPN-connected enterprise networks
- Managed Service Provider (MSP) environments
In these environments, reliability, diagnostics, automation, cellular optimization, and remote management are business requirements rather than optional conveniences.
1. Advanced Cellular OptimizationOne of the biggest challenges in LTE and 5G networks is that the strongest signal is not always the best connection.
Different cells often provide significantly different throughput, upload performance, latency, Carrier Aggregation capability, congestion levels, and overall stability.
Many deployments use directional outdoor antennas carefully aligned toward a specific serving cell. However, the modem may automatically select another cell or different frequency band, reducing overall performance.
Features such as:
- Advanced Manual Band Lock
- Cell Lock (PCI / Cell ID / gNB)
- Manual Carrier Aggregation Selection
- Manual Band Combinations
- Preferred SA / NSA Mode
- Cellular Profiles
- Network Scan
- Manual Modem Reconnect
would allow installers to optimize each deployment according to actual radio conditions instead of relying solely on automatic modem decisions.
2. Field Observation – Cellular RF PerformanceDuring multiple real-world deployments, I observed that some Nebula FWA515 units appeared to deliver lower LTE and 5G radio performance than comparable business-class routers from other vendors operating under the same network conditions.
To ensure the comparison was as fair and accurate as possible, every test was performed using:
- The same installation location
- The same mobile operator and SIM card
- The same computer
- The same Ethernet connection
- The same testing methodology
- The same environmental conditions
- Consecutive testing within a short period of time
Across several comparisons, the competing devices consistently reported stronger cellular signal readings and, in some cases, achieved better throughput and connection stability.
I cannot determine whether these differences are related to modem firmware, RF tuning, antenna optimization, or signal processing algorithms. However, I believe this observation deserves investigation by the engineering team.
If firmware optimization could improve radio performance, it would represent one of the most valuable enhancements for enterprise customers, as signal quality directly affects stability, latency, and overall network performance.
3. Professional DiagnosticsWhen Internet performance changes unexpectedly, administrators need to determine whether the issue is caused by:
- Cell changes
- Carrier Aggregation changes
- Signal degradation
- Network congestion
- LTE / 5G switching
- Local interference
Historical visibility of RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, RSSI, CQI, MCS, Cell Handover History, Carrier Aggregation History, MIMO status, and modem temperature would significantly reduce troubleshooting time while improving diagnostic accuracy.
Without historical visibility, troubleshooting often relies on assumptions instead of measurable data.
4. Enterprise Networking
Business environments commonly separate network traffic using VLANs to isolate services and improve security, performance, and manageability.
Typical examples include:
- Office users
- Guest Wi-Fi
- Security cameras
- VoIP phones
- Servers
- Network management
- IoT devices
The FWA515 would benefit significantly from enterprise-grade networking capabilities such as:
- Full IEEE 802.1Q VLAN support
- Multiple VLANs
- Per-port VLAN assignment
- Wi-Fi SSID VLAN mapping
- DHCP per VLAN
- Inter-VLAN Routing
- Static Routing
- Policy-Based Routing
- Improved Bridge Mode
- Enhanced IP Passthrough
- Advanced IPv6 configuration
These features would allow the FWA515 to integrate seamlessly into existing enterprise infrastructures without requiring additional networking equipment.
5. Centralized Management & Automation
Many organizations deploy dozens or even hundreds of routers across multiple sites.
Managing these devices manually is time-consuming and does not scale efficiently.
Official support for:
- REST API
- SNMP
- SSH
- CLI
- Home Assistant Integration
- Grafana
- Prometheus
would enable centralized monitoring, automation, reporting, and proactive maintenance while reducing operational effort.
Additional automation features such as:
- Scheduled Reboot
- Automatic Modem Reconnect
- Ping Watchdog
- WAN Health Monitoring
would further improve reliability in unattended deployments.
6. Performance Monitoring
Enterprise administrators require much deeper visibility than simple speed tests.
Historical monitoring of:
- CPU utilization
- Memory usage
- Device temperature
- Modem temperature
- Cellular signal quality
- Connection uptime
- Traffic history
- Per-device bandwidth usage
- Daily, weekly, and monthly reports
Helps identify developing issues before they impact production services.
A professional dashboard with exportable CSV and PDF reports would greatly improve long-term monitoring and troubleshooting.
7. USB Storage Integration
The integrated USB interface represents valuable hardware that currently remains underutilized.
Firmware support could enable:
- Automatic configuration backups
- Scheduled backups
- Firmware rollback images
- System log storage
- Diagnostic reports
- Crash logs
- CSV/PDF export
- One-click restore from USB
These capabilities would improve disaster recovery while maximizing the value of the existing hardware platform.
8. Engineering & Developer Features
Advanced users, system integrators, and enterprise engineers often require deeper visibility into modem behavior.
Read-only engineering capabilities such as:
- AT Command Console
- Engineering Mode
- RF Diagnostics
- Debug Logging
- Diagnostic Export
would simplify troubleshooting, improve deployment quality, and reduce technical support requests.
These features would primarily benefit professional users while remaining invisible to standard users.
Community CollaborationThese requests are not based solely on my own experience.
